All the way from Toronto, Canada, Shanuka is blazing her own trail. With over 100k streams on Spotify in 2019 alone, Shanuka is finding her groove. As we got to tap in with her, we got to learn a little more about her. Find out more about her below.
Walk us through your background- Tell us more about you and what you do
I am a singer-songwriter from Toronto. I started releasing my own music 3 years ago on Soundcloud by myself. I produced, recorded & wrote all of my songs in my room. Once I started to get a little noticed, I took music more seriously & met my producers who I eventually started to work with consistently. We released many songs onto streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, etc. I started to gain a lot of attention on Spotify which helped me build an amazing support system with people from all over the world. My latest single ‘If You Could’ made it onto 3 Spotify Editorial Playlists. Since 2019 I have performed at many events in Toronto at popular venues such as The Drake Underground, The Burdock Brewery & many more.
What inspires you?
Many things inspire me. A variety of artists inspire me for different reasons. Some for their creativity, some for their personality. Certain situations inspire me too. I will write based off my own life & sometimes write about something that I can’t even relate to. Writing is like storytelling to me & that definitely is something that also inspires me.
What are some of the obstacles you've faced and how has it made you better?
I think my main obstacle is self doubt/insecurity. Sometimes I feel I’m not good enough or don’t have what it takes to be an artist but I snap out of it & remember what my purpose is & what I am capable of.
What do you think makes your music different from other artist?
I have a different sound & style. I think appearance wise as well. Every song I release sounds different & gives off a different feel because I try to be versatile & continue to experiment with the help of my producers.
It's important to give yourself credit; What do you feel is/are your biggest accomplishment(s) to date?
I am so blessed to have many accomplishments big & small. It is hard to think of just one but I think my biggest most important accomplishment is getting out of my comfort zone. I used to be so scared to be the center of attention but I’ve grown to get more used to it. It has definitely given me more opportunities as well
What are some things that you still want to accomplish?
I want to make music my full time career & tour around the world with my team. I want to meet my listeners around the world. I want to be financially stable enough to provide for my family & live a comfortable life doing what I love. I want to keep creating music for the rest of my life.
What new music do you have coming up?
As of now I do not have any confirmed new releases but I do plan on getting an EP done this year. That would probably be my next big release.
What do you want people to takeaway from your music?
I want people to feel. Whether it is them vibing to the beat or relating to the lyrics. I want people to connect with me & feel something. I want to help give people the confidence to do what they love without being afraid and if I can do that through my music, that is a huge accomplishment to me.
Finally, If you had a message to give to any artist coming behind you, what would it be?
Do what you love. Find your purpose & hold onto it. Don’t care about what people say because they’re watching while you’re doing. Recognize your talents, accomplishments, affects on people. Make music because you love to, not because you want to blow up & get clout. Things are best when it happens authentically. Keep writing, keep creating.
