Teyana Taylor - The Album (Review)

Last night or this morning rather, Teyana Taylor released her highly anticipated album. For us, this is the first full length project that we have received from the entertainer since 2014. Although we got a super Dope K.T.S.E in 2018 , it just left us wanting more. So here it Is.

Let’s just start off by saying that this album is worth the listen. I am personally not a fan of long albums (this one being 1:20:00 and 1:45:00 with video) but this one was just extremely cohesive with it’s playlist-like structure. At 23 tracks, Taylor does a great job of delivering to us so many emotions. Often times, we seem to not receive that from artist once they have everything they dream of in accolades, family, marriage etc.

But this felt different. In this album, we got Family (in tracks like Intro & Come Back to Me), Heartbreak & Vulnerability (in Lose Each Other & Still) (by the way the tears at the end did it for me), Steamy Sex (in Morning and 1800-One-Night), Love (Wake Up Love & Try Again) , Dance and Empowerment (Made it & Wrong Bitch, Killa), Triumph ( We Got Love) and everything else in between. Taylor made sure to not just show the good side of her Career, Family and Relationships but everything leading up to it and even during.

This tape was extremely vulnerable from the intro with her giving birth, to her tears falling on the end of the track Still. This kind of vulnerability is what sets artist apart from true entertainers and I love the intricacies.

Now onto the features. As a seasoned artist, who although hasn’t dropped many projects, she has garnered the respect of her peers and predecessors. Let’s admit that some of the features on this track list are hard to pull off from the average artist. With features from Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu (on an Erykah Badu track) and a Missy Elliot and Timbaland collaboration (WITH THE BEAT BOXING) are extremely rare these days and shouldn’t be taken lightly at all. Not only that but the features from all of the other artist as well like Rick Ross, Quavo, Future, Big Sean, Kehlani, Davido and King Combs were all full length verses some with layers which can only be obtained by artist who have earned said respect.

As 2020 has shaped up to be a rough one so far, lets hope that the second half is better and I believe that this is a good start. Due to the album’s length and other notables I could continue, but I think you should tune in for yourself to see what you get from it.

As far as my first listen is concerned, I believe that this could possibly be in the running for album of the year, only time will tell. Happy Juneteenth!
